One of the things that I love is hardware with beautiful housing. So I attempted to create a wooden housing based on examples of ornately decorated objects that I found. I'm going to be looking at this every day, so I wanted it to be pleasant and not as impersonal as so much technology feels.

2013-Dec-22 UPDATE ...
I've found that there are some failure modes for the networking on the Netduino that allow the watchdog to keep being reset. So I've gone a step further and now the door controller has to be "pinged" by an external server on a regular basis to keep it alive - otherwise it resets itself every 10 minutes....

I live near Boston and our public transit system uses NFC cards for regular users of the subway. This means that everyone I know has one already in their pocket, so it makes it very easy to give any of my friends access. Also, the city gives out the cards for free, so it's easy to get your hands on unused ones just by looking for them in the subway stations.

Imagine if you could open your front door using your mobile phone. It might sound like a futuristic idea but Apple has patented a system which allows the iPhone to communicate with external devices such as locks. Behind this magical door-opening concept is RFID technology, which currently allows you to wave an Oyster card over a reader to get into a station, for example.

Elevator - Wikipedia
