The Last HOPE (2008): REAL ID Act and RFID: Privacy and Legal Implications

Saturday, July 19, 2008: 8:00 pm (Turing): Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a practical and useful technology for locating items without the requisite close proximity as needed with older technology, such as bar codes. However, new technologies such as RFID "powder," internal and external pre-crime detectors, and insertion into children's clothing and other personal items have pros and cons associated with the practicality of its use. In addition, RFID use in access control,...

Modern Libraries Have RFID/AMH Systems "Designed In".

Modern Libraries all have adopted RFID/AMH (Radio Frequency Identification/Automated Materials Handling) equipment as a part of any "new building" designs. This equipment can easily sort and stack up to 2000 books and hour, which will reduce the cost of check-in operations for a Central Site, or Branch Library, operation.

The Palo Alto Measure N libraries do not have RFID/AMH in the building design that is going to the voters.

RFID card production

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking. Some tags require no battery and are powered by the electromagnetic fields used to read them. Others use a local power source and emit radio waves (electromagnetic radiation at radio frequencies). The tag contains electronically stored information which can...
