What is the difference between passive and active RFID ...
Answer by Tigerwhit
Confidence votes 41.7K
Active systems have a much longer range than passive systems due to having an internal battery. Because of this an active tag will be much larger and more expensive than a passive tag. The passive tag will basically convert the RF signal from the Interrogator or reader and turn it into energy to return the signal.
Active tags will often be found on larger sized shipping containers/products whereas a passive tag, due to its small form factor can be used on any variety of products, containers, boxes...etc.
Passive tags are usually more durable than...

Background
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology uses radio signals to identify and track objects. The objects being tracked can have active (battery-powered) or passive (unpowered) tags. For high-value assets conventional RFID uses battery-powered tags. These tags have a range of approximately 10 meters depending on the power levels, but have the disadvantage of being bulky in size and requiring periodic battery...

How RFID Works - Technovelgy
How does RFID work? A Radio-Frequency IDentification system has three parts:
A scanning antenna
A transceiver with a decoder to interpret the data
A transponder - the RFID tag - that has been programmed with information.
The scanning antenna puts out radio-frequency signals in a relatively short range. The RF radiation does two things:
It provides a means of communicating with the transponder (the RFID tag) AND
It provides the RFID tag with the energy to communicate (in the case of passive RFID tags ).
This is an absolutely key part of the technology; RFID tags do not need to contain batteries, and can therefore remain usable for very long periods of time...

What is RFID? How RFID works? RFID Explained in Detail
In this RFID system, this RFID reader continuously sends radio waves of a particular frequency. If the object, on which this RFID tag is attached is within the range of this radio waves then it sends the feedback back to this RFID reader.
And based on this feedback, RFID reader identifies the object.
